Intel’s Atom N270 CPU is expected to continue playing the major role in the netbook market in the second half of 2009 as the launch of its successor the Atom N450 will be postponed to the first quarter of 2010, according to sources from notebook makers. However, Intel has responded saying it has not announced any change to its schedule and plans to start shipping Pine Trail (Pine Trail-M) later in the year.
Although netbook players received engineering samples of the Pine Trail platform from Intel as early as June, with the price of platform (US$64) still a lot higher than the Atom N270, players remain conservative on launching related netbooks in the second half.
With Intel having only received a small amount of Pine Trail orders plus the concern platform might impact the sales of its ultra-thin notebooks and the next-generation notebook platform Calpella, Intel has decided to postpone the launch of Pine Trail.
The sources believe the delay of Pine Trail will not impact the PC market much, while it will provide more benefits than losses as launching the new platform might end up leading to another price war.
In related news, Intel will issue last order notice for the Atom N270 processor in January of 2010 and will phase the CPU out in March, the sources noted
