When it comes to sci fi universes, none have as broad of an appeal as Star Wars. Star Trek, Stargate, Battlestar - they may have huge, devout followings, but that doesn't usually extend to younger audiences. Although Episode 3 may have been a bit dark for children, Star Wars' infiltration of the young crowd has been greatly aided by Star Wars: The Clone Wars "spin-offs" that bridge some of the gap between Episode 2 and Episode 3. How did they appeal to a younger audience? They're animated. An animated TV series initially aired in 2003, and then a CGI animated film was released in 2008, which directly led into a CGI animated TV series that began in 2008 and is still being produced. Three video games over the past couple of years haven't hurt either.
Now it seems like a new PC game is in the works based on that Star Wars era - and it'll be an MMO. Rumor has it that Sony Online Entertainment is developing a browser-based MMO called Clone Wars Adventures. Though no details have been unveiled, odds are it'll be modeled after Sony's current browser-based MMO, the hugely popular Free Realms - meaning it'll be free to play and feature microtransactions. Like the television series, it'll be aimed at a younger audience, so it most likely will not compete against Sony's other Star Wars MMO, Star Wars: Galaxies, nor BioWare's highly anticipated Star Wars: The Old Republic, which was announced in 2008, but has yet to have a projected release date (or pricing scheme, for that matter).
Based on the popularity of the Star Wars universe and the unbelievable success of Free Realms (8 million registered users as of February 2010), if this rumor is indeed true, Sony may have another big success on its hands - which makes this rumor not so far-fetched.
